PROS AND CONS OF OUTSIDE HEADSHOTS

Business portrait taken outside a glass fronted office with blue tinted windows, the lady is wearing a blue denim jacket with a red blouse.

THE BACKGROUND

Pros: Probably the biggest difference between indoor & outdoor headshots is the background. Outdoor portraits have the potential to have very dynamic & interesting backgrounds. A nice background can add a little more personality to a headshot.

Cons: The main focus of any headshot should be you. When someone looks at your headshot, they should look right at your eyes & your expression. If the background is distraction, this has the potential of taking away from the intended subject.

Pro Tip: Like I mentioned before, the main focus of a headshot is you. As much as possible, try not to wear anything that distracts from this. A solid coloured top with little or no patterns is a great way to make sure that your eyes & expression are what people notice.

THE WEATHER MAY AFFECT YOUR HAIR

Cons: Another potential factor to consider is your hair. If it happens to be a little windy, it will make it harder to manage your hair. Fly away hairs can be edited out, but there may not be much we can do if your hair is flying everywhere.

Pro Tip: Bringing a mirror is a great way to make sure that your hair (makeup) is exactly how you want them. Your final images will be edited to minimize/remove blemishes so don’t spend too much time worrying about this. I can take care of this after your session.

CONSISTENCY FOR LARGE GROUPS

Pros: If you have a small group, outdoor headshots could be a great option. If they can all be taken at the same location & on the same day no problem but as we all know the British weather can be a little unpredictable.

Cons: If you have a large business where you are looking for overall consistency in your headshots, indoor headshots may be the best option. This is especially the case if the headshots are spread out over multiple days or if you plan on adding additional headshots over time.

IS IT TIME TO UPDATE YOUR PROFILE HEADSHOT?

BEFORE

AFTER

I had the pleasure of photographing a friend recently who needed a new profile head shot for work and LinkedIn.

We discussed the look and feel she was after along with hair/makeup/clothes and colours. I wasn’t sure when the red blouse came out but on reflection I love it, its rich & warm and definitely suits her. This was one of 3 outfits we chose to work with.

Do you think any particular colours work for profile pictures?

SMALL BUSINESS BRANDING PHOTOGRAPHY

Business Branding

Having spent many years working as a school & nursery photographer my love for the job came from photographing school prospectuses, to show the school ethos & commitment to their student’s demonstrating interaction & engaged pupils.

I have tried to carry this philosophy across to my new business as a Headshot and Business Branding Photographer.

When Sophia from “Munchy Play” got in touch to ask if I could help with her promotional photography and use her son as the main model I was more than happy to help.

Unlike adults, using a child as the main subject in your photoshoot could have a limited amount of time before their concentration fades but luckily this little fella had bags of energy and was a ton of fun.

If you would like to discuss any ideas you have for “Business Branding Photography” please get in touch.

RETURN ON INVESTMENT

“Return on investment” ROI is a metric used to understand the profitability of an investment. ROI compares how much you paid for an investment to how much you earned to evaluate its efficiency.

I had to look this up after watching a new training tutorial this week which mentioned ROI several times & it made me think, how much is a “Business/Profile Photo Shoot Session worth to you?

In my opinion visuals are no longer a nicety – they’re an essential, a key component of a successful social media & marketing strategy. This could be as simple as “Personal Branding” headshots to a complete business marketing shoot.

WHAT'S YOUR CROP?

As a general rule I tend to shoot my headshot photos a little wider (image a) and then crop to size afterwards, this is for several reasons.

My camera has a 44.80 million pixel sensor so unlike older camera’s the resolution is staggeringly good.

Not every company has the same crop for their headshots so leaving a little extra space for cropping afterwards leaves me more flexibility.

LinkedIn profile headshots are so small you really need a tighter headshot if you want to maximise the small space (image b/c) but don’t forget this will be re cropped by LinkedIn to a circle.

I personally like adding a little rotation to my headshot image before cropping (image c) it’s not a massive amount but I feel it looks just a little more dynamic.

Cropping into the head & shoulder (image c) might sound like a strange option but just look in any glossy magazine, it’s been around for many years.

Leaving a little extra space to the one side of your headshot (image c) in moderation this looks great but some photographers are leaving a lot of space, if this is to add words or text afterwards that makes perfect sense, if not I will let you decide!

SPOTLIGHT/ACTOR HEADSHOTS

So what should cast directors be seeing when they look at your headshots?

How do you go about finding the photographer to get the images that will do the best for your career?

The first thing is your key headshot needs to be a faithful, an update representation of you, with your eyes engaging the viewer.

Your personality must leap off the screen, it shouldn’t express any one emotion or atmosphere too overwhelmingly. Only if you’re asked for “US style” headshots should you send images which could be tailored to a specific role.

If this is you & you need advice or help with your profile shots, please drop me a line.
